Travel Highlights / The beauty of an Apulia bike tour: pedaling mile after mile amongst olive trees, over tiny country roads that only the locals know, or along the jagged and panoramic coast between Otranto and Capo Santa Maria di Leuca, is an unforgettable experience. In the distance stands the lighthouse on Italy's "heel" – we've pedaled south for miles, but just a few hundred yards on, that spur of rock that divides the Adriatic Sea from the Ionian no longer divides anything. The sea of Greece blends with that of Italy in a Mediterranean exultation to simply soak in with your gaze. No words are needed when sea and sky come together as one, in an unmistakable Mediterranean blue. From here we ride west; the coast descends and the olive trees lower more gently toward the sea. We ride right alongside it for stretches. In this stretch toward the northwest, we often ride with the wind – or rather, into the wind – but any exertion melts away in the loveliness of the landscape. This is Salento, people. This is our Apulia bike tour. Just a little farther north, the land of the Trulli awaits us.
